( 4) July 2007 - Stone House Restaurant Review
STONE HOUSE RESTAURANT
Four of us went to eat at the Stone House, which is now a Chinese restaurant. If you have not been there, you should consider it.
We each had wine -- not the greatest wine list, but acceptable -- or beer and then were served a large bowl of won ton soup in the middle of the table to help ourselves. A plate of beef dumplings with two different sauces followed. For the main course we had chicken fried rice, a semi-spicy hot chicken dish with peanuts, a vegetable platter and a sizzling beef platter that was served on an iron plate and was literally sizzling. The veggies were full flavoured and the freshest I have been served anywhere. I love spices, but was particularly pleased that the spices were not allowed to overtake the flavour of the veggies. The beef plate was truly plentiful.
On the menu was a listing for "Crispy Milk" under the appetizer/dessert category. We just had to ask, then of course had to try. It was a milk something -- our Chinese waitress could not quite describe it -- fried in a batter and was only a little sweet, but certainly interesting. We had it with coffee. The only complaint over the entire meal was that the "Crispy Milk" was fried in oil that previously fish was fried in and it disturbed the flavour.
Of course if you had it as an appetizer, then maybe it would not have mattered so much. All our food was very nicely presented and the service was great.
The restaurant itself is an old house, but it was clean and not quite the Chinese decor of the others in town. For the four of us, the entire bill came to $110.00 including taxes (but not including tip) which really surprised us, we thought it very reasonable.
Would I go back again? Absolutely!
