The Organic Farm

( 6) September 2007 - The Ferry Last Stop Café in Portugal Cove

This café is located just before you get to the big rock that starts the winding road down to the Ferry Dock. Paulette King has had a restaurant and small bar at this location in various forms for many years. I remember when she applied for her liquor license and was initially denied because the restaurant is across the street from a Church. This year she has been buying salad mixes from the Organic Farm. Her mother, Mercedes is Co-Owner and helps with the cooking. I am delighted that the A.G. had time to drop in for lunch and send along this review before the summer is over. (Melba Rabinowitz)

This is the time of year when gardens are overflowing, summer guests are gone, and kids are back in school; Time to take a look around and pamper one’s self a little. To take my own advice, my husband and I went out to lunch on a spur of the moment to the "Ferry Last Stop Café.”

You walk up to this small house on old stone steps and you are immediately greeted at the door. The decor took me aback and it was a little while before I was interested in ordering. It is very hard to describe, when everything under the sun is in that room and somehow it still seems to work. Lots of colour and lots of old artifacts. I simply walked around and admired the initiative to display such a collection. In time, we both ordered a "Three egg frittata" that was very fresh, nicely displayed with organic vegetables and a very generous serving. The taste was just right with herbs to complement but not overtake. It came with a thick slice of toasted home baked bread. We both had coffee and no room for dessert. I only wish that the bread was whole wheat or some other grain rather than just white. Still, it was good bread. The bill came to $19.06 for the two of us.

If you are out that way, or even if not, make a point of visiting this restaurant. You will not be disappointed. I will certainly go back with my friends. Although there were not many customers when we were there on a Friday at lunch time, I am told it is best to make reservations. You may also need to phone to check on the hours it is open before driving out. It is closed on some days. (Phone: 895-3082)
