( 5) August 2007 - The Fishers’ Loft in Port Rexton
(Please Note. We are pleased that AG was able to spend a week-end at Fishers’ Loft recently and write a review. John and Peggy Fisher are long standing customers of The Organic Farm. Peggy Fisher places her order with Mike on Thursday. On Friday, Mike drops the freshly picked herbs and vegetables at The Seafood Shop in Churchill Square to join their order for Fresh Seafood, which heads to Port Rexton within the hour.)
The FISHERS’ LOFT is a four and a half star B&B in Port Rexton, that's an absolutely wonderful place to visit! An old house renovated in keeping with it's time, wide floor boards and a view to die for. The owners made sure of our comfort to every small detail such as an afghan over our shoulders for cool evenings, a pair of binoculars in the room, cozy white bathrobes and numerous interesting books to read or just browse. For the ladies, a makeup mirror and a special facecloth for makeup removal. The surrounding flower and herb gardens were just coming alive. We went for long walks, saw icebergs, fresh moose tracks, lots of birds and two sea otters, which were furious, when we went closer than they wanted.
Food at The Fishers’ Loft is nothing short of fabulous. Dinner Chef, Helen Fowlow, is certainly providing interesting and wonderful tasting dishes. The first evening the appetizer was carrot ginger soup, followed by braised peaches, blue cheese and greens. Main course was pan fried cod (a 2.5 inch thick piece!) prepared to perfection and served with mashed potatoes and fresh asparagus. We finished with a chocolate torte with blueberry coulis, and a cup of coffee. The coffee deserves special mention. It is the best I have had by far, in a long time. Good wines are also available to complement your meal.
After a good sleep in an all white, comfortable bed, breakfast was included free range eggs! Oh, can life get any better? And blueberry pancakes, home made muffins with more and more of the super good coffee, thanks to breakfast Chef, Barb Ayles. When I commented on how delicious the free range eggs were, I was surprised to learn that some people would not eat them because they were so deep yellow in colour. Apparently, they prefer the pale, sickly looking eggs that can be purchased in every grocery store! Hmmm..... some of us simply live to enjoy such old fashioned treats. Tanked with lots of good food and full of energy, we went on the 5.2km Skirwink Trail, returning in the evening for yet another of Helen Fowlow's creations. Three courses to start with, salmon cakes, fresh gazpacho, and braised scallops with Asian cabbage salad. The main fare was halibut, green beans and citrus risotto. Rhubarb pie with cream was a perfect finish to such a wonderful meal.
After supper, we went on a sunset kayak trip in Trinity. Our guides were good humoured and put up with two people who could not even swim to save their lives, but thought it would be fun to try kayaking. You know, one of those "I must try before I die...." things. A loverly bed was waiting for our tired bones when we returned to Fishers. I can not say enough wonderful things about Fishers’ Loft, the accommodations and the food. This experience is well worth the drive to Port Rexton and saving up for that very special occasion.
This is a very popular tourist site this time of year. You will need reservations. Check their website for more information at www.fisherloft.com.
