2010 Planting Dates
PLANTING DATES USED BY ORGANIC FARM
The Organic Farm is located on the Avalon Peninsula in Portugal Cove, Newfoundland, twenty minutes from downtown St. John’s. This is the planting guidelines developed over the past ten years, using seeds selected for short seasoned climates. The time lines may be different for some of the micro-climates in the greater St. John’s area. For example, Portugal Cove area is warmer than St. John’s and cooler than Holyrood.
Planting time-lines will be different in other regions of the province. Seedlings that have been hardened, exposed to both direct sunlight and a range of outdoor temperatures above freezing, are generally stronger, more disease resistant, and better adapted to local conditions.

Transplants are usually set directly into the soil, in the floor of the greenhouse or in large pots. There are several things you can do to protect from cold so they can get an earlier start. You can use heaters and fans to circulate warmer air on extremely cold nights. The most practical way is to use hoops over the row of plants and stretch plastic or floating row cover over the hoops. This will give the plants a few weeks earlier start. Of course, there are no guarantees; the weather is the over-all governing factor.
| Basil | June 15th - August 15th |
| Cucumbers | June 15th - July 15 |
| Tomatoes | June 15th - July 15th |
| Peppers | June 1 - July 15 |
*Most years, June 15th is a workable date; however, in the 2008 season, the extreme cold delayed the planting of basil, cucumbers, and tomatoes, but not peppers.
