Environmental Practices

Certified by OCPP Ontario Inc.   Local Soil Building Materials

The Organic Farm is certified by OCPP Ontario Inc. and has an Environmental Plan.  This is in accordance with a national strategy known as the Atlantic Environmental Farm Planning Strategy.    The Organic Farm is a Manure Free Farm and uses Local Soil Building Materials such as kelp, shrimp and crab meal, along with peat from the farm as well as hay, leaves, woodchips and locally manufactured compost.

Foliar Sprays   Water Conservation

The Organic Farm uses Foliar Sprays such as Compost Tea and Fish Emulsion on a regular basis in both greenhouse and field production.  These are bought commercially and prepared on the farm.  Foliar sprays can be an effective method for correcting soil deficiencies, overcoming the soil’s inability to transfer nutrients to the plants and increasing plants’ resistance to disease. Although expensive, foliar sprays are one of the most effective practices known to Organic Farmers.    The Organic Farm practices water conservation by using surface water from the forest and hills behind the farm, and diverting it into an irrigation pond.  This pond feeds an irrigation system for the greenhouses and lettuce fields, borrowing the water temporarily and then letting it flow back into its natural watershed instead of pumping water from the underground water table.

Greenhouse Gas Mitigation Projects   Organic Garden Supplies

The Organic Farm is a Demonstration Site for Green House Gas Mitigation Projects on green manuring in partnership with The Greenhouse Gas Mitigation Program for Canadian/ Newfoundland and Labrador Agriculture, managed through the Newfoundland Federation of Agriculture.

The Organic Farm has an on-site Gardening Store, which provides organic garden supplies and plants adaptable to our short season.
